The Hamilton Island Running Club was formed informally during mid 2006 when six intrepid souls made the journey to Townsville for the Running Festival. Wearing singlets sent straight to the hotel, fresh from the screen printers; Karon Handy, Steve Jackson, Dean Harvey, Ben Goodwin, Serina Bell and Manuela Frank began a tradition that has continued proudly ever since!

The club evolved in 2007 and embraced the sport of triathlon and was formally linked as a branch of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club at such time under the auspices of the Hamilton Island Running and Triathlon Club (HIRTC).

The club was quick to impact on the local community and the region. Under its leadership, the Hilly Half Marathon began in 2007, followed shortly thereafter in 2009 by the Hamilton Island Triathlon and Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim. The club is a host venue for the Mother’s Day Classic and assist in the delivery of athletics for Island children. They hold a monthly Dent Dash on the stunning championship golf course on neighbouring Dent Island, regular training sessions, rookie programs and attend events both around region and around the globe! The latest event to spawn from the Island community is the Great Whitehaven Beach Run.

The club is very fortunate to have the support of sponsors from local businesses; ‘Explore Whitsundays’ and of course Hamilton Island Enterprises. Together they are an active and vibrant part of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club and enjoy being a part of the team that promotes and supports the sport of triathlon in the region.
